PLEDGES TAKEN

A Better World is an initiative by Sunfeast YiPPee! in collaboration with ITC's flagship programme called Well-being Out of Waste (WOW) to tackle the environmental challenge of plastic segregation and responsible reclamation of natural resources.

We believe that a simple effort to segregate plastic can have a significantly positive impact in creating a better world. You can also contribute in a simple way: Take the pledge to segregate plastic. Every pledge translates to 1 kg of plastic being recycled by Sunfeast YiPPee.

They say children are the leaders of tomorrow. But, we think that they are the change-makers of today! Swarathma, India’s leading folk-rock band, render their spectacular take on the subject. Joining hands with municipalities across the country, ITC WOW initiative is turning once unsanitary waste-threatened neighborhood into clean and healthy environment. A unique source segregation and collection pathway, Wow works towards a circular economy, consuming its own waste.

ITC’s ‘Wealth Out of Waste’ (WOW) is a multi-pronged initiative that aims at creating a culture of recycling and reducing the garbage load through source segregation. The initiative focuses on making every stakeholder an agent of change- from the general public like school children, housewives and corporate employees to industries and business enterprises.

At an individual-level, the WOW programme creates awareness amongst people about advantages of the “Reduce-Reuse-Recycle” approach and promotes sustainable livelihoods for waste collectors.

At a societal level, the WOW programme leverages powerful partnerships to improve civic amenities, public health and hygiene, generate employment for marginalized communities, and provide cost-effective raw materials for paper, plastics, metal and glass industries.

One of its many remarkable partnerships has been with Muzaffarpur Municipal Corporation (MMC) and Centre for Science & Environment (CSE) to transform Muzaffarpur, Bihar, into a zero landfill zone. In December 2016, for the first time, local administration, a civil society organisation and industry came together to implement MSW in Muzaffarpur. By adopting segregation and processing at source, the programme focused on making solid waste management financially self-sustainable.

With over 80% segregation achieved on a daily basis, Muzaffarpur has witnessed visible improvement in the waste management scenario. The city also improved its rank in the Swachh Survekhsan 2017 and has been included in the list of smart cities in India. The city has now become the first in Bihar to have its own solid waste management bylaws, which have been duly reviewed by the elected board and were recently passed by the state government.

With similar work across the cities, the programme has successfully bagged many awards and accolades like:

  • Best programme for Waste Management Awareness and Educational Initiative – Assocham
  • Swachh Dhoot Award – New Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC)
  • Recognition for Swatchhta hi Seva under ‘Swachha Andhra MissionWOW – Andhra Pradesh, School Programme was nominated for presentation at International Conference of Water Engineering and Development Centre (WEDC), UK
